Word from the Pastor

“Thanks for the memories.......”

This was the theme song for Bob Hope. It seems most appropriate as the theme for my final Pastor’s page message.

I thank God for the memories I have of the ministry here at St. John, all the members of our St. John Family of Faith, and for the people of our surrounding Communities. We have shared many experiences - mostly good, some difficult. You have allowed me to be a part of your lives. I thank you. It has been my privilege to be your Pastor.

There is a prayer that I have used each year at the last class with “my” Confirmation students. It seems just as appropriate at this time.

“Lord God, I thank you for the time You have given to us to study Your Scriptures together, and to strive, with the power of Your Holy Spirit, to know You and Your Will for us, especially by Your love at work through Jesus, our Savior and Lord. It has been my privilege to teach and to share experiences. I pray, Father, that wherever and whenever these teachings have been correct, and reflective of Your Truth and Will - that You would always cause them to be remembered and to be applied for comfort, for strength, for direction, for power, and for peace. Kind and merciful Father, I also pray, that wherever and whenever my words, or actions, were not in accord with Your Will, or where I have caused offense, I earnestly pray, that You would provide the power and willingness to forgive, and that You would cause the error or offense to be forgotten, so that no harm will ever come to others because of me. I commend all of us, Your children, into Your gracious Hands, not knowing what lies ahead, only assured that we know and trust You -- the One Who holds the future in His Hands. In the forgiveness and power of Jesus - Amen!”

(Come and Go as you please)

Join St. John family and friends as we celebrate the gifts God has showered upon us through His humble servant, Rev. Carl H. Help us mark the special occasion of Pastor’s retirement with an open-house style party from 6:00pm to 11:00pm on Saturday, February 13, at Pulaski Inn in Cudahy.

There will be hors d’oeuvres, coffee, soda, and dancing throughout the night.

We are looking forward to a festive evening where everyone is encouraged to arrive when they can and leave when necessary.

Retirement Celebration Fund
The Church Council has decided that the Congregation will pay for BOTH the celebration event and a special gift to Pastor and Dianne, using Council-allocated Designated Funds that are available for just such a purpose as this.
Donations received from individual members & friends of St John will simply be used to offset the total cost incurred for both the celebration and the gift.
The Council sincerely apologizes for any confusion that has resulted from the communication of this information.

PASTOR KRUEGER’S POST-RETIREMENT PLANS

Pastor Krueger will continue in his position as SELC District President, serving the 56 Congregations of the SELC, with their corresponding Day Cares, Preschools, and Elementary Schools, and the Pastors, Teachers, and other Professional Church Workers. His term of office extends to 2012. Pastor Krueger also serves in the appointed office of Milwaukee County Veterans’ Services Commissioner.

The SELC District has always been a leader in good Stewardship practices by keeping District administration at a minimum. Therefore, the District has never “owned” any real estate property. The “headquarters” of the District comes to the Church where the District President is Pastor. The District supports the District President’s Congregation by completely covering the costs associated with a Vicar. St. John has benefitted by the ministry of the 11 Vicars who have served here during Pastor Krueger’s terms of office. Preliminary approval has been given for St. John to continue to host the SELC District Office. Terms of the agreement are being studied by the St. John Church Council, with items to include the monetary value of “hosting” and certain pastoral services offered to the Congregation by Pastor Krueger.

Pastor Krueger’s final worship services as Pastor of St. John are scheduled for the weekend of February 4,6 & 7, and Ash Wednesday Communion Services, February 17.

Ash Wednesday

Holy Communion And The Imposition of Ashes
4:00pm & 7:00pm - February 17

Ash Wednesday marks the start of the 40-day countdown (not including Sundays) to Easter.

Lent is a penitential period, that is, a time to remember the severity of our sin which necessitated the saving sacrifice of Jesus. When we recognize how much Christ did suffer for our sin, we are moved to feel sorry for our sin against God and we desire to serve God out of love for what He has done.

Our Ash Wednesday worship service with Holy Communion is meant to help us become very aware of our many sins, so that we can better appreciate the FULL, FREE FORGIVENESS of God through Christ.

Ashes are “worthless’ — as are we, imperfect sinful persons, to a perfect God UNTIL God gives us the worth of His love for us. Then, we can recognize our own, and others’ eternal worth to the God who loves us.

As an expression of repentance/sorrow over our sin, and of our innate “worthlessness” to God, we shall “offer” the traditional practice of the IMPOSITION OF ASHES on the foreheads of those worshipers who would like to participate. While the imposition is a part of the worship service, those in worship may decide to participate or to refrain.

Perhaps the greatest earthly “experience” of forgiveness is shared at the communion rail as the Pastor shares the individual absolution and the repentant sinner receives the Body and Blood of Christ. So, a special part of Ash Wednesday (and also Good Friday) is for the Christian to FAST — to refrain from eating and/or drinking, to appreciate all the more the heavenly food of Jesus’ body and blood. This is again a token sacrifice to help us appreciate the sacrifice of Christ, to pull away from the ordinary and the usual, and to focus our attention on God.

“Lent” is that period of 40 days (not including Sundays) prior to Easter, set side   by Christians to remember the sufferings of Jesus by which He won for us forgiveness, peace and salvation.

Lent
Lent starts with Ash Wednesday – February 17. We will have our traditional Holy Communion Worship Service with the Imposition of Ashes.

Lent then continues for five weeks.  Each week we will have a special Wednesday Lenten Worship Service (without Communion).
There will be two Worship Services each Wednesday: 4:00pm and 7:00pm.

Our Lenten theme this year will be:
“Surrounded By A Cloud Of Witnesses,
With Our Eyes Focused On Jesus”
Each week, we will explore the events surrounding Jesus’ death from the perspective of individual characters from Scripture.
Our understanding of the significance of the events of “Holy Week” will be enriched as we view them through the eyes of John, Peter, Mary Magdalene, and others.

Except for Ash Wednesday, St. John will host a fellowship dinner each Wednesday, with a free will offering to cover the meal costs. Because many Christians choose to “fast” (go without food) on Ash Wednesday as a sign of repentance, there’ll be no dinner on February 17th.

Fellowship Dinners will be at 6:00pm on each Wednesday. The menu is as follows:

February 24 — Build Your Own Subs
March 3 — Spaghetti and Meatballs
March 10 — Baked Potatoes with Toppings
March 17 — Corn Beef and Cabbage
March 24 — Pot luck Chili - Bring your own container of chili (toppings provided)

Voters’ Assembly – February 21

A Special Voters’ Assembly will be held on Sunday, February 21st

Light Lunch            12:00 Noon (free will offering will be held)
                  Meeting                        12:30PM

Agenda:
The Triennial Convention of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (the
denominational body to which we belong) will take place July 10-17, 2010.
One item of business at the Synodical Convention will be to elect the Synodical President and Vice Presidents who will serve in office until the next Synodical Convention.
Each Congregation is asked to nominate candidates for these positions. Our practice for nominating delegates is through congregational vote. This will be the major item of business for this meeting.

We need a Quorum of approximately 30 voting members (5% of Communicant members)
Voting members are defined as follows:
Male and female Communicant members who are age 18 or older

Help Our Local Charities -
Project Concern & Interfaith for the Elderly
Volunteer
The best gift or help anyone can give is YOURSELF! Both Project Concern & Interfaith are actively searching for new volunteers. The needs within our communities of Cudahy and St. Francis are very great. Do you have an hour or two, once or twice a month?
You can help!

The Elderly
Our area population is aging. Our older adults are in need of friendly visitors, telephone reassurance, and transportation help. Interfaith is open on Mon, Wed, and Fri from 9am-3pm.  You can call 483-4474 to volunteer.

The Economically Challenged
Individuals and families have been negatively affected by the market crash and businesses downsizing. Project Concern provided help for more than 500 people in October. Project Concern needs volunteers who will sort food and clothing donations, prepare boxes of food for distribution, and assist the clients in finding what they need.
To volunteer call 744-0645. Project Concern hours of operation are Monday 9am to noon and 3pm to 6pm, Wednesday 9am to noon, Friday 9am to noon, and the first Saturday of the month from 9am to 11am.

Donate
Money - sometimes dollars are easier to give than hours. Both Project Concern & Interfaith for the Elderly depend on the generosity of donors. If you can, give to support the work and buy necessary items.
